Gas Detonation Takes Three Police Officers During Property Removal Action in the Verona Area

A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 people were hurt in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house close to Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and another man who escaped following the incident was apprehended not long after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area showed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the property was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the blast had taken place on a level above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the propane tanks being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told Italian media, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
