Research Uncovers More Than 80% of Herbal Remedy Titles on E-commerce Platform Potentially Produced by Artificial Intelligence
A recent study has exposed that artificially created content has infiltrated the natural remedies publication section on the online marketplace, including items advertising cognitive support gingko formulas, stomach-calming fennel remedies, and citrus-based wellness chews.
Alarming Statistics from Automation Identification Research
Based on examining 558 publications made available in the platform's herbal remedies section during the first three quarters of the current year, analysts concluded that 82% were likely created by artificial intelligence.
"This represents a concerning disclosure of the widespread presence of unlabelled, unchecked, unsupervised, potentially automated text that has thoroughly penetrated Amazon's ecosystem," commented the analysis's main contributor.
Specialist Worries About Automatically Created Medical Information
"There exists an enormous quantity of alternative medicine information circulating currently that's entirely unreliable," said a medical herbalist. "Artificial intelligence won't know how to sift through the worthless material, all the rubbish, that's completely irrelevant. It might misguide consumers."
Illustration: Top-Selling Publication Under Suspicion
An example of the ostensibly AI-generated publications, Natural Healing Handbook, currently maintains the top-selling position in the platform's dermatology, aromatherapy and natural medicines categories. The book's opening markets the book as "a toolkit for personal confidence", advising readers to "turn inward" for solutions.
Questionable Author Credentials
The writer is named as a pseudonymous author, containing a Amazon page presents her as a "35-year-old herbalist from the beachside location of an Australian coastal town" and founder of the enterprise My Harmony Herb. Nevertheless, neither the writer, the brand, or related organizations appear to have any online presence beyond the Amazon page for the title.
Identifying Artificially Produced Material
Research noted multiple warning signs that point to likely artificially produced alternative healing text, featuring:
- Extensive utilization of the plant symbol
- Botanical-inspired creator pseudonyms including Rose, Fern, and Clove
- Mentions to questionable alternative healers who have advocated unsupported cures for serious conditions
Larger Trend of Unchecked AI Content
These publications constitute a broader pattern of unchecked artificially generated material being sold on the marketplace. In recent times, wild mushroom collectors were advised to steer clear of foraging books sold on the site, apparently written by AI systems and featuring unreliable guidance on differentiating between poisonous mushrooms from edible varieties.
Requests for Oversight and Marking
Industry representatives have called for the marketplace to begin marking automatically produced text. "Every publication that is completely AI-created should be labeled as such content and automated garbage must be removed as a matter of urgency."
In response, the company commented: "We maintain listing requirements controlling which publications can be listed for acquisition, and we have preventive and responsive methods that aid in discovering content that violates our requirements, whether artificially created or not. We invest significant effort and assets to ensure our requirements are followed, and remove books that do not conform to those requirements."
