Cliff Scaling in the Peak District

Including absolute novices will rapidly be climbing protected regional outcrops on this weekend course. Participants will learn securing the rope, belaying and a range of methods of ascent, along with rappelling. Limited to a half-dozen students to a single guide, there is plenty of individual attention and tailored objectives. The course is appropriate for anyone over the age of 13 and over, from absolute beginners to those with limited indoor experience. It is day-only option, but you can find a range of suggested, budget-friendly lodging nearby, such as campgrounds, hostels, B&Bs and pubs with rooms. The base is a short stroll from the local train station, situated on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

Abstract Painting in Andalucía

Moclín, a ancient hillside village in Andalucía, approximately a short drive from Granada, is the breathtaking location for this creative getaway. Artists of all abilities – including novices – will be taught how to plan and create non-representational pieces. A portion of the time will be spent in the open air, working on guided exercises out in nature. These initial charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be expanded upon in the studio, with attendees producing multiple abstract landscapes in acrylic paint to be shown in the village. The group has exclusive access of the venue, which is centered on an central patio and has a roof terrace with views over the countryside. The fee includes five days’ painting tuition; all meals; and an excursion to the nearby fortress and other points of interest.

Plant-Based Cooking in Portugal

This Mediterranean cooking retreat, based at a villa by the river in the inland Portuguese region, is inspired by the plant-based cuisine of celebrated cooks. Attendees will master the art of meze spreads, take part in a hands-on falafel session, refine mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains including spicy mushroom ragu and moussaka. There are visits to the village market and a local vineyard to taste local vintages, along with free time for strolls by the nearby river, to relax on the deck or swim in the pool. The accommodation, a former farmhouse, has five bedrooms, as well as glamping tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an uplifting, welcoming weekend adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a high-energy group warmup, then several hour-and-a-half classes covering different street dance styles, then an hour-long jam to show off new moves. Dancers are divided into groups according to ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to popping and locking, all the way to advanced dancers or teachers. This event does not provide lodging but there are a number of places to stay nearby, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into central London.

Maritime Singing Break in Cornwall

St Ives is the perfect setting for a maritime music retreat. Guests will be taught historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at writing their own. The schedule includes vocal warmups, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The holiday is held in a rural hotel overlooking St Ives Bay. All meals are provided, such as a Cornish cream tea on the first day, breakfast options, lunches to go and evening meals. Grog, unfortunately, is not provided. Writing in Crete

Writer and lecturer Greg Mosse runs the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He explores topics including story structure, character development, setting and tension, to sending manuscripts to agents. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will co-host special sessions at the beginning and end of the retreat. The retreat is held at a traditional complex in Vamos at the base of the Lefka Ori – ten one- and two-bedroom cottages are set around a central garden with a pool (companions are welcome to come along). On the final evening, budding authors mark the occasion with a musical performance in the courtyard and a farewell dinner.

Beginners' Apiculture in Mid Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of courses covering sustainability: from creating habitats to upcycling. This weekend course will help attendees learn the basics of beekeeping, explore the life cycle of honeybees and discover their environmental benefits. It is aimed at produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. This course is also a opportunity to de-stress in the organization's carefully maintained woodlands, which are habitat for wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. Accommodation the evening prior is £80, and full-board accommodation for the weekend is 97 pounds.

Sailing for Beginners in the Blackwater Estuary

These recently launched summer sailing weekends are spent on Wayfarers and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary. They are designed for adult beginners learning the ropes or those with some knowledge who want a skills update. Participants can hone their steering, strengthen their seamanship and aim for the recognized certification levels in a supportive atmosphere. There are day-only and overnight packages, with accommodation in simple dorms in the waterfront sailing school. The day option includes lunches, while the residential package covers two nights' stay and full board, from full English breakfasts to evening barbecues.
